Our first tasting of 2020 explores the thought-provoking array of wines on offer from Portugal. We catch up with TWM’s Tom Surgey to get a sneak preview of what he hopes to discover at our World of Difference with Wines of Portugal tasting on 27th February.
I love Portugal for its variety and diversity of wine styles. It feels like a brilliantly authentic, off-the-beaten-track, raw wine scene ripe for exploration. I’m most looking forward to introducing guests to the broad range of wines available and getting stuck in and discovering new gems with them!
As much as I love the variety of reds Portugal has to offer, there will be loads of white wine too. Everything from crisp, bright whites full of youthful energy to rich and full-bodied styles to rival age-worthy Burgundy, via endearingly quirky, aromatic liveners. Then there’s the properly brilliant, entirely unique fizz.
The reds too range from clean, fresh, crunchy contemporary wines that would be as at home in your fridge on a hot day as any of the whites, to the full bodied, rich bits of business people might expect. Ports are here of course (thank goodness) and while you might be forgiven for thinking that you already have your Christmas board game tipple sussed, the range of styles on show will bring fortified wines firmly into your year-round arsenal, where they belong.
This promises to be a great tasting to explore your likes and push your boundaries in a classic, old-world region that is unique from the well-trod (but still very delicious) paths of other old-world countries.
