From the comfort of your own home, you can join expert Tom Surgey of Three Wine Men for a unique virtual Portuguese Tasting.
Join Tom as he guides you from the North to the South of Portugal taking in laser-beam Vinho Verde, enthralling Bairrada and the sunny wines of the Alentejo. This is a gastronomic experience of a tasting; expect unique flavours, textures, acidity and salinity. Get some roast pork ready for dinner.
Being a young(ish!) wine personality, Tom’s star rose at a time when Portugal started shouting loudly about their incredible wines, not just fortifieds. It feels natural to Tom therefore, to talk about Portugal in this way and his perception of this brilliant country’s wines is fresh and dynamic.
He can’t wait to show you what it’s all about.
To access the tasting you must buy the tasting package from Butler’s Wine Cellar which consists of the three wines listed below for £47.50 (+ £9.99 P&P at checkout). As well as the wines, you will be emailed the link for the Zoom webinar 48 hours before the event.
Please note: all orders need to be placed by 5pm on Friday 14th August to ensure delivery by 20th August.
The Soalheiro vineyards were established in 1974, not far from Melgaço (in Alvaredo in fact), Portugal’s most northerly town, and overlooking the Minho River. Since then, this very special terroir has allowed Soalheiro to forge its reputation as the very finest producer of this variety in Portugal.
Aroma’s reveals a classic Alvarinho Soalheiro, intense, super clean – citrus, and tropical with mineral notes.
Luis Pato is widely regarded as the person who put the wines of Bairrada on the world map. He started making wines in 1980, ten years after his father started bottling the first Bairrada wines, once the region was legally recognised.
This particular white is the Luis Pato Vinhas Velhas Branco, his old vines white wine. It’s a really interesting blend – Bical, Cercial and Cercialinho. It’s honeyed and feels rich, but it also has great balancing freshness and isn’t heavy at all, no oak ageing here.
Peter Bright is the original ‘flying winemaker’, a dynamic and enterprising Australian who has lived in Portugal since 1982, his motto is “experiment, but don’t mix styles”.
The Terra d’Alter vineyards are structured according to the new world approach – the vines are planted using modern training and irrigation techniques, facilitating treatment and ensuring quality.
This 100 % Aragonez (Tempranillo) is totally sulphite free but is interesting despite that – deep red fruits and spicy vanilla. Soft and rich tannins with a long spicy salty finish.
